This is called IVI system short for In-vehicle Infotainment System. There is certain organization like GENIVI creating standard software infrastructure for this, applying for most of the automotive vendors. This alliance aims at creating a software infrastructure made of compliant components for car infotainment systems. The base operating system is Linux.
